What to Expect

What to Expect from Working with Deaton & Deaton Counseling

Deciding to visit a counselor is not always as easy or simple as it may seem. Individuals new to therapy may feel nervous or uneasy about opening up to a professional counselor. Feeling apprehensive about sharing your struggles with someone other than a trusted family member or friend is normal. However, it is important not to let this feeling stop you from pursuing personal healing and growth.

If you are considering speaking to a counselor for the first time, you may not know what to expect. We pride ourselves on building a foundation of trust so our clients can experience the full benefits of counseling. We meet every one of our clients with acceptance, empathy, and authenticity so that they can be comfortable and have a safe space where we can work toward their goals.

Your First Visit

Your first counseling session will resemble a doctor’s appointment at a new physician’s office. Before speaking to a counselor, you will typically be asked to fill out paperwork such as HIPPA forms, insurance information, medical history, counselor-patient services agreement, and a record release form.

The introductory session is different from a regular counseling session. Our goal is to learn more about you and discuss why you’re here and the goals you have for counseling. Once this happens, you and your counselor will be able to work together to set reasonable goals, begin the process of healing, and work towards living the kind of life you want to start living.

The introductory counseling session will also allow you to learn more about your counselor. During your first counseling session, feel free to ask about your counselor’s credentials and their experience treating the issues or conditions you are currently dealing with.

Benefits of Ongoing Counseling

The first counseling session can be a tough one simply because opening up to your counselor and yourself may take time. If you continue your work with a professional counselor, you will notice the visits becoming more therapeutic in nature and increasingly beneficial to your overall well-being. Though there can be more challenging moments or moments where you feel like progress isn’t being made, consistent work and honesty with yourself and your counselor will help you reach positive outcomes with personal growth.

Reframing is a key benefit of counseling. This is the process of reconceptualizing a problem by seeing it from a different perspective. As humans, our perception of our own shortcomings or negative experiences can sometimes become clouded by our emotions or harmful self-image. A professional counselor can help you see from a different lens and find solutions to what troubles you. The benefits of reframing include increased self-confidence, self-awareness, and healthy thinking patterns.
