Substance Use Counseling

Substance Use Counseling

In 2019, over 20 million Americans were diagnosed with Substance Use Disorder, but only 10.3% received treatment. Because of its devastating (potentially fatal) consequences, seeking help is essential when you or a loved one notices a substance abuse issue.

At Deaton & Deaton, we partner with individuals on every step of recovery, from ready to seek help through recovery and sobriety. We offer a safe space for individuals to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences so they can feel supported through their recovery and experience healing and growth.

What to Expect

Substance abuse is defined as the excessive use of or dependence on drugs or alcohol. When an individual continues to participate in drug or alcohol use even after it has caused significant problems, they have developed a Substance Use Disorder, sometimes more commonly referred to as an addiction.

Substance Use Disorder can be dangerous, so it is important to get help for substance abuse as soon as possible. Substance Use Disorder is a serious condition that will require immediate attention, but it is important to remember that it is treatable. With the right help and a willingness to change, individuals can learn healthy coping mechanisms so they can live a healthy and fulfilling life.

Our Approach to Substance Use Counseling

Individuals struggling with addiction can greatly benefit from a systemic approach to substance abuse counseling. Systemic counseling can help a person make meaningful strides with their counselor to focus on how their behavior, relationships, and life choices have played a part in their addiction. This approach to counseling can help a person deal with thoughts, emotions, and experiences and help them develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Treating Substance Use Disorder and achieving lasting sobriety will require much more than simply ending one’s physical dependence on a substance. To create a sober lifestyle that withstands the test of time, individuals must identify the situations that contributed to their substance use. Addiction is a disease, but in many cases, there are underlying factors that motivate an individual to abuse substances. Whether it is trauma or a co-occurring mental health condition, many people abuse substances without realizing the motivating factors of their drug or alcohol addiction. By working closely with a trusted counselor, individuals in recovery will be able to identify what has led to their addiction so they can address it and begin rebuilding their lives.

Benefits of Substance Use Counseling

Counseling for Substance Use Disorder also helps individuals identify healthy stress management techniques and find better ways to deal with hard times in life. Many individuals who suffer from Substance Use Disorder use drugs or alcohol as a way to escape from their struggles. The numbing effects of drugs and alcohol are extremely tempting for individuals seeking refuge from their daily lives. Feelings of anxiety, depression, or posttraumatic stress can cause even the strongest of people to turn to substances for temporary relief. Counseling can help a person find healthy stress-relieving habits that provide relief during hard times.

Addiction is a disease, and a commitment to sobriety will require lifelong management of cravings and triggers. Because of this, individuals undergoing counseling must prioritize building and maintaining an ongoing support system. Working with a counselor or attending group therapy can provide individuals with a long-term support system that helps them maintain their sobriety. When the temptation of relapse feels unmanageable, speaking to a professional counselor or a peer group can help a person stay sober and live the life they want.
